The Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation was established in April 2000,
receiving a generous endowment from the Fleming family. This enabled
the Foundation to acquire The Fleming Collection from Robert Fleming
& Co. Limited prior to the sale of the bank the same year. Started
in 1968, The Fleming Collection is widely regarded as the finest
collection of Scottish art in private hands, comprising paintings
from 1770 to the present day.
The Foundation aims to raise the profile of Scottish art, which
is poorly represented in museums and galleries outside Scotland,
by introducing it to a wider audience. The intention is that The
Fleming Collection shall remain a living collection through further
acquisitions, focusing in particular on young Scottish artists.
The Fleming Collection gallery, supported by The Fleming-Wyfold
Art Foundation, has grown from strength to strength since it first
opened its doors to the public in January 2002. The Collection has
attracted international critical acclaim for its exhibitions of
both well known and unknown Scottish artists which have been too
long overlooked by our national institutions. As well as touring
exhibitions there are four annual exhibitions held in the gallery
at 13 Berkeley Street, London. These are drawn from the Collection
with loans from other private collections and museums. It is open,
without charge, to members of the public Tuesday to Saturday.
